Adobe releases free Web-based Photoshop beta
The long-awaited, Web-based and free version of Adobe Photoshop is now available as a beta, Adobe Systems Inc. said today.Photoshop Express allows users to store up to 2GB of images, make edits to their photos, and share them, all online. It is seen as a way for Adobe to compete with free applications like Google’s Picasa, which have emerged over the last few years.
Since it’s to be used by consumers, the company has put a lot of emphasis on ease of use. Only a few clicks are required for standard edits such as removing blemishes and red eye, cropping, resizing and converting to black and white. No experience is necessary, Adobe said.
After spending only a few minutes with the beta, I have to give Adobe credit. They didn’t try to overreach by attempting to shoehorn some of the more advanced features of Photoshop into what is termed as an “Express” version.
There are some rudimentary image manipulation elements here. I call them rudimentary since they have existed on the desktop version for quite some time. When taken into account that this is a web application, these features become something more.
The integration into Photobucket and Flickr is nice, even though I do not use either service. Since this is a beta, I’d expect some interesting developments to come along by the time it is released as final.
Does this qualify as an assumed win for Adobe over the likes of Picasa? Probably not. However, I would give them fair odds in the outcome of that particular fight.
