Wordpress 2.5
I originally expressed some ambivalence regarding upgrading to this new version when it finally released. I had over-fed myself with doubt based on the numerous blog posts that warned about compatibility problems. Never before had that been a tremendous concern, since upgrading WordPress was equally effortless and painless.
I am glad to say the same held true for the upgrade to 2.5.
I decided to “pull the trigger” and make the leap when 2.5 was released as final. I made sure I backed up the important stuff so that if everything went to hell I would at least have a pathway back. I ran the automatic updater plugin that I have been using since I started using WP, and viola, everything was rosy.
Well, almost. Everything was functional, but there were two minor issues. First was the Automatic Updater Plugin had to be updated itself before WP 2.5 could use it’s own internal updater for plugins. Its kinda tangled, but lets just say that one was getting in the way of the other. Easily solved, I downloaded and manually copied the new version of the plugin to my host and that was it. After that I was able to make the necessary updates to the NextGEN gallery plugin that I have also been using.
So far, I am happy with the new version. The UI is a bit cleaner than before, and it’s something I can get used to as soon as I re-memorize where some of my links have been relocated to. There is apparently some built in media manager for photos and gallery display. I’m not sure if this will wind up taking the place of NextGEN, but I will take a look. So far I am VERY happy with NextGEN and it will take a bit to convince me to switch to something else.
So the bottom line is that my hesitation and doubt were in vain. 2.5, like it’s previous iterations, is solid, easy to install/update and a joy to use.

Um. Yeah. So I just got around to doing this upgrade, and I must say that while I’m OK with a lot of the changes there’s a couple that I found annoying enough to have me considering a downgrade — in particular, the moving of the “categories” on the write post page. Since you use categories on your site, have you found this move (now requiring scrolling to find ‘em instead of them being right there on the right) to be annoying, or have you gotten used to the new location?
A little annoying at first, but not enough to make me hate the entire upgrade. Wordpress is flexible enough that I can change the layout of the post page myself if I wanted to put the categories where they used to be.
There are a couple of custom themes for WP Admin out there, Fluency being one of them. Give them a look, you may like them better.
