Creative Doldrums

For reasons I can’t figure, I’ve been in those doldrums for the past couple of weeks.  It’s maddening, because I acutely felt the passage of time during this period, but have nothing to show for it.  No matter how many times I picked up a pencil, it just “wasn’t there”.  I just couldn’t bring myself to even be interested, much less excited about any of the projects I was working on.

There are not many things worse for a creative mind than to be in that place where he/she’s flat.  It’s like reaching for something that you’ve come to expect to be there, only to find yourself catching nothing but air.  Creative minds, whether they be visual, written, or musical all experience these “highs and lows”.  It tends to disturb me a bit more, since the last time I had a period like this, it lasted years.

Fortunately I get the feeling that I am beginning to emerge from that languid state.  The fact that I am even posting about it is a good sign, since during that time I couldn’t even summon enough of a creative thought to fuel my alternate passion for writing.  For the moment I’m chalking it all up to a momentary period of burnout, and the result was simply a need to “recharge the batteries”.

I guess the moral / lesson learned here is that if you find yourself in a similar place, not to despair about it too much.  While it’s difficult to be at ease with it at the time, it’ll come back eventually.  Some of the many suggestions I had was doing something simple like taking a walk, or reading a book (one even suggested dancing a jig…  not sure if anyone really needs to see me doing that…).   While I did try some of those things, I eventually went back to my tried and true form of therapy.

full speed ahead…
